KFL&A Public Health is warning of an increase of cases of invasive meningococcal disease (type B) in the area, with three recent cases exceeding the usual count.
“Invasive meningococcal disease is a serious infection that can progress rapidly and have severe consequences if not treated promptly,” said Dr. Piotr Oglaza, medical officer of health at KFL&A Public Health. “It’s important to recognize the signs and symptoms of meningococcal disease and seek medical care immediately if illness is suspected.”
This bacterial infection can quickly escalate and is characterized by flu-like symptoms.
IMD symptoms can include:
- sudden fever
- intense headache
- stiff neck
- nausea
- vomiting
- sensitivity to light
- purplish skin rash
The disease spreads through close contact, and while the MenB vaccine isn’t standard in Ontario, it’s recommended for certain individuals. Residents under 25 are urged to ensure they’re up-to-date with routine meningococcal vaccines.
