During Radon Action Month, KFL&A Public Health is encouraging all residents to test their homes for radon.
To find out more about what radon is, myFM spoke with Kersey Kalubi, public health promoter at KFL&A Public Health.
Radon is a radioactive gas that comes from the breakdown of uranium in rocks and soils.
It can enter buildings through cracks in foundation floors and walls, gaps in pipes, open floor drains, or any other area of exposed soil.
Kalubi shared with us the risks associated.
In Canada, radon is the leading cause of lung cancer for non-smokers.
Radon testing is simple and inexpensive.
Community members can purchase an at home test kit by visiting kflaph.ca/Radon.
Kalubi says do it yourself testing is very straight forward.
