The scariest thing about Halloween night was that there were people who had been drinking and then driving on our roads.
The Lennox and Addington OPP charged two different drivers with impaired driving.
First, around 8:06 p.m., the police received a report about a possible drunk driver on Wright Place near Old Orchard Road. Concerned citizens noticed a vehicle driving back and forth in the area. They spoke to the driver and realized that the person seemed impaired. They immediately called 911 and kept the driver there until the police arrived. A 38-year-old man named Sean Dehaan from Bath was charged with drunk driving and failing to follow police instructions.
Later, just before midnight, police officers were patrolling the area and stopped a vehicle on Barrett Street in Napanee. When the officers were talking to the driver, he suddenly drove away. Unfortunately, the vehicle ended up crashing into a tree not far down the road. Both the driver and a passenger ran away from the scene on foot. The OPP Emergency Response Team and the Canine Unit were called to help find these two individuals. The driver was eventually found by the Canine Unit in a wooded area near the crash site and was arrested. However, they couldn’t locate the passenger. The driver, 22-year-old Zachary Martin from Central Frontenac Township, has been charged with impaired operation, dangerous operation, failure to stop after an accident, and flight from police.
All the accused individuals were released with a promise to appear in court at a later date. As well, both accused’s licence were suspended for 90 days, and vehicles impounded for seven days.
