The United Way of KFL&A deeply mourns the loss of Arthur Britton Smith and extends its heartfelt condolences to his family.
Mr. Smith leaves a remarkable legacy that profoundly impacted both the Kingston community and the United Way KFL&A. He served as campaign chair in 1967, later becoming Board Chair and a dedicated Board of Directors member for several years. His ongoing generosity led to his appointment as the organization’s Honourary Patron in 2001.
In 2016, he made a historic $1.2 million donation to support a home for homeless youth aged 16-19, the largest single gift received by the United Way KFL&A to date. The Elmwood transitional house, established in 2017, continues to aid youth in the community.
On his 100th birthday in 2020, when asked why he gave, Mr. Smith responded, “It’s payback. The community has been good to me, so it’s a way to give back and help the less fortunate members of this great country and community.”
The United Way is deeply grateful to Brit Smith for his remarkable support over the years. Kingston has lost a very special community member and you will be deeply missed.
