With rental scam’s currently active in the Greater Napanee community, it’s important we all know the warning signs.
We know about these scams because this reporter almost fell for one! But I knew the warning signs and luckily didn’t lose any money.
myFM spoke with Constable David Yome, L&A OPP Media Relations Officer, who told us about some common rental scams.
Some other less common scams include missing amenities. They can also bait and switch, when the landlord tries to get you to sign an agreement to a different property than what you viewed.
If you’re questioning if it’s legit, you can always do some research. You can search the landlord online, visit the property and knock on the door, and check with neighbours or current tenants.
If you do lose money to this type of scam or any scam, call the OPPs non-emergency number at 1-888-310-1122, contact your financial institute to stop the transaction, and report it to the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501.
