During the pandemic, the Leeds Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit worked well with other health units in Eastern Ontario and Ottawa. This showed how they could work together effectively.
Now, there might be a plan for a huge health unit in Eastern Ontario and in the rest of the province too.
The government might give money to health units that want to come together and become one. This is part of the government’s plan to make the healthcare system better.
In 2019, the government talked about combining the different health units in the province. But they stopped this idea when COVID-19 started in 2020.
At a recent meeting, the Health Minister, Sylvia Jones, said they are thinking about this idea again. She wants to work with health groups to make their roles clear and avoid repetition. She also said health units that decide to join together could get money to help them do it.
Nothing is official yet. They are just talking about it for now.
