Residents of nine municipalities including Greater Napanee will have the opportunity to acquire a variety of native tree and shrub seedlings at no cost, during this Saturday’s Community Trees initiative at the Strathcona Paper Centre.
“There are so many benefits to planting native trees. They help to clean air and lock up carbon, slow and filter runoff, and aid in recharging groundwater while reducing flooding. They also help to shade and cool our urban areas while providing habitat for wildlife and improving our general health,” said Maya Navrot, Quinte Conservation’s Outreach and Stewardship Coordinator. Navrot adds, “The Emerald Ash Borer has done a lot of damage to Ash trees across the region, it’s more important than ever to replace that tree loss and with a diversity of native species.”
Seedlings will be available starting at 9am. Their availability is limited. Bring a bucket, plant pot, or bags to carry seedlings home in and plant them as soon as possible.
The Community Trees program is funded by the participating municipalities with guidance and support from Quinte Conservation.
