A local student was named Fire Chief for a Day.
The Napanee Fire Department hosted a fire safety poster contest open to Grade 5 students in the town.
myFM spoke with Dean Martin, Fire Prevention Officer, says every grade 5 class in the community was given a bunch of different themes they could choose from when making their poster. Martin told us about Winner Ella Smith’s poster.
On Thursday, April 6th, Napanee Fire visited Southview Public School looking to pick up their winner for a day of fun at the fire station.
Ella says she was surprised when she saw her poster being held up in front of her class as the winning poster. She then took a ride in a fire truck back to the station for lunch and to begin her shift as chief.
Martin says both Chief Ella and her sister Brooke both did some firefighting duties while at the station. “After lunch, a few decisions were made by Ella to direct on-duty staff to conduct a few tasks while she supervised. Before returning to school, Ella sat in the captain’s seat of the pumper to direct the driver back to the school.”
