Local police are warning the public that cybercriminals are using synonyms to scam, con, and dupe you.
Most email clients have security filters that scan your incoming emails and when certain keywords accompany other suspicious elements, the email will be filtered into your Spam folder.
The cybercriminals are bypassing this by using synonyms. In one instance, they may replace the word “invoice” with “Remittance Advice” as that is not a common keyword.
The email would then include an image that looks like an attachment to download that, if you clicked, you’d be clicking on an image that links you to a dangerous phishing site.
To stay safe online, remember to never click a link or download an attachment in an email that you were not expecting, watch out for uncommon language, and when an email claims to include an invoice, try to find evidence of the transaction elsewhere.
