A man is facing multiple charges after a string of vehicle thefts. Lennox and Addington County OPP made the arrest after the suspect stole vehicles from multiple locations on Monday morning.
Investigation revealed that a Dodge Shadow vehicle had been stolen from a business parking lot off of Center Street in Greater Napanee on the morning of Sunday, May 02. Later that day, the vehicle was involved in a collision at the intersection of Shannon Road and Weese road in Tyendinaga Township and was left abandoned at the scene when the driver fled on foot.
Early in the morning of May 3, police responded to a report of a stolen F250 Pickup truck from a residence on Shannon Road. A short time later, this same vehicle crashed into a hydro pole and a cedar rail fence. The suspect fled on foot and OPP Canine and Emergency Response Team were called in to assist in the investigation.
During the canvass, police learned that a GMC Jimmy had been stolen a short time earlier from a residence on Marysville Road in Tyendinaga Township. Tyendinaga Police Service located the stolen vehicle at a gas bar off of Lower Slash Road with a person sleeping inside it.
Police initiated a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle when the driver reversed quickly colliding with the police cruiser and fled at a high rate of speed in a dangerous manner. A Tire Deflation Device was successfully utilized on Marysville road. The suspect vehicle still continued to drive onto the westbound 401 on ramp where police units blocked in the suspect vehicle forcing it to stop. The driver was arrested and transported to detachment for further processing.
Police seized tools, break in instruments, stolen credit cards, a cheque and licence plates
As a result of the investigation, L&A County OPP has charged a 44-year-old man of No Fixed Address with:
- Dangerous Operation of a vehicle;
- Flight from Police;
- Three counts of theft of a motor vehicle;
- Six counts of driving while prohibited;
- Five counts of possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over $5000;
- Possession of Break in Instruments, all contrary to the Criminal Code and; and
- Driving while under suspension; and
- Two counts of Fail to remain at the scene of an accident contrary to the Highway Traffic Act.
The accused was held for a bail hearing and is remanded into custody, scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Greater Napanee by video on May 06, 2021.
L&A County OPP encourage our community to practice good crime prevention techniques. Examples would include:
- Always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the key.
- If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle.
- Always park your vehicle in a well-lit area.
- Never leave valuable objects or packages in full view. Put them in the trunk.
- Never leave your vehicle unattended while it is running.
