Quinte Detention Centre is getting a new build and some upgrades as part of cash injection into Ontario’s corrections system. A separate building will be adjacent to the existing facility at Quinte – much of which will be used for inmate programming and recreational facilities. New single occupancy living units will be built to house women.
Almost three years ago an independent corrections adviser recommended sweeping changes to the way jails in Ontario are run. Critics are advocating for a move away from incarceration through social supports like education and housing – to help keep people out of jail. When people have to serve time, they say the province should consider alternatives to jails like halfway houses.
