Morningstar Mission is planning to relocate its operations in Greater Napanee as demand for its food and homelessness programs continues to grow.
Executive Director Kevin Alkenbrack said the organization has been considering a move for some time as part of its strategic planning. A community survey also confirmed that food programs and homelessness services are among the mission’s most valued supports.
The current Water Street location, including the warming centre, was never intended to be a permanent home. Alkenbrack said the warming centre began during the COVID-19 pandemic and is now reaching capacity nearly every night.
Morningstar plans to eventually sell the Water Street property and relocate to a larger site outside a residential neighbourhood while remaining within walking distance for those who rely on its services.
The move is expected to take time, with changes likely beginning within three to six months and the full relocation taking up to a year. Moving the commercial kitchen and many community programs will require careful planning.
Morningstar operates a food bank, community meals, takeout and meal delivery programs, clothing and furniture programs, income tax clinics, and the seasonal warming centre.
The organization has also launched fundraising efforts to support the move.
