A two-vehicle collision on Highway 401 in Kingston on Tuesday morning left one person in hospital and a driver facing charges for unsafe tires.
Frontenac OPP say the crash occurred just after 8:30 a.m. near Sydenham Road. Kingston Firefighters had to extricate one person, who was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both vehicles were towed.
Police charged a 25-year-old woman from Greater Napanee with having improper tires.
myFM spoke with the OPP’s Bill Dickson, to learn more about what classifies improper tires.
Winter tires are not mandatory in Ontario, but OPP strongly recommend them for better traction, stopping, and maneuverability.
Worn tires reduce control, especially in snow, and can affect fault and insurance in collisions. Dickson says in the end, it also comes down to your driving habits.
Police also remind drivers that festive RIDE checks are active, and impaired drivers endanger everyone. As they can’t be everywhere, Dickson says they’re calling on the public to be their second set of eyes.
The OPP wish every one a safe and merry holiday season.
